Step 4 of 6

Find a Coach and Mentors (optional)

Connect with experienced mentors to guide your team.

Parents are often your best starting point for mentorship and coaching. They can provide valuable guidance, supervision, and support to help your team succeed. Parents may have engineering, business, or technical skills they can share with your students.

Ask Parents to Be Coaches and Mentors

  • Reach out to team members' parents and explain what FTC is about
  • Ask if they're interested in helping as coaches, mentors, or advisors
  • Parents don't need to be robotics experts — enthusiasm and willingness to learn go a long way
  • Create clear roles and expectations so parents know how they can contribute

Ask Other FTC Teams to Be Mentors

Other FTC teams in your area are a great resource for mentorship. Experienced teams understand the competition, have hands-on experience, and are often willing to help new teams get started. Reach out to local teams and ask if they'd be willing to mentor your team.

  • Contact established FTC teams in your region
  • Ask if they have members or coaches who can mentor your new team
  • Other teams can provide technical guidance, competition strategy, and real-world advice
  • Network with your local FTC league to find interested mentors from other teams

Action: Aim to recruit at least one adult mentor or coach alongside parent involvement. A strong mentorship relationship can accelerate your team's learning and success.
